The Way He Speaks
In the noise of the modern world, one of the most frequent questions we believers ask is: “How do I know if God is speaking to me?” We often wait for a thunderclap or a lightning bolt, yet Scripture reveals a God who is constantly communicating with His children. God’s communication is both a sovereign act of power and a tender act of intimacy.
The Capacity of the Creator
Before we ask how He speaks, we must acknowledge His ability to do so. In Psalm 94:9, the psalmist poses a rhetorical question:
“He who planted the ear, does he not hear? He who formed the eye, does he not see?”
It is absurd to think the Creator is limited by the very senses He designed. The One who fashioned the human ear is the master of all frequencies. He is never hindered by our circumstances, nor does He lack a “unique way” to reach us. He who designed our capacity for language is more than capable of utilizing it to reach our hearts.
The Universal Language of Nature
The first way God speaks is through the “silent sermon” of creation. Psalm 19:1 declares,
“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.”
Nature acts as a universal preacher. Even without words, the sun, moon, and stars testify to God’s power and “steady providence.” When we look at the complexity of the world, we are hearing a proclamation of His character. Nature doesn’t just show us that God exists; it shows us His majesty, His order, and His faithfulness.
The Living Dialogue of the Word
While nature speaks of God’s power, His Word speaks of His heart. In Proverbs 6:22, we find a beautiful promise regarding Scripture:
“When you walk, they will lead you; when you lie down, they will watch over you; and when you awake, they will talk with you.”
The Word of God is not a dead letter; it is a companion. It “talks with us” by addressing our specific burdens and secret thoughts. When we open the Bible, the Lord sees the heavy weight upon our hearts and reflects His truth directly into our situation. Furthermore, as Psalm 107:20 reminds us, this Word is medicinal:
“He sent out his word and healed them.”
It doesn't just provide information; it provides deliverance.
The Teacher in the Midst of Trials
Perhaps the most comforting aspect of God’s voice is its presence during “the bread of adversity” (Isaiah 30:20-21). We often think God goes silent during our trials, but Isaiah promises that your Teacher “will not hide himself anymore.”
God often speaks most clearly when our ears are “unstopped” by affliction. We hear a word behind us saying, “This is the way, walk in it.” This is the counsel of a Shepherd redirecting a wandering sheep. God uses both our joys and our sorrows as a classroom to instruct us in the way we should go.
The Promise of Personal Guidance
In Psalm 32:8, the Lord gives us a profound commitment:
“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.”
This “eye” implies a constant, watchful care. God does not just shout directions from a distance; He guides us with the subtle glance of a Father who is intimately acquainted with our path.
He has given us all a number of specific promises over the course of our lives so far. Shouldn’t we claim and pray about those constantly and continually?
Are We Ready to Listen?
God speaks through nature, His Word, people, dreams, and even our circumstances. Thus, the question is rarely “Is God speaking?” but rather “Are we ready to listen?” When we tune our hearts to His frequency, we move beyond mere religious duty into the delight of a personal relationship. Listening to our Creator gives us more than just direction, it gives us purpose. Let us pray for ears to hear the Teacher who is never truly hidden!
