“It is finished!”
“It is finished!” A cry of victory, of accomplishment, of completion. Jesus Christ was true to his mission on earth and fulfilled his purpose of arrival. This saying is recorded in the Gospel of John 19:30.
So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. John 19:30
What is finished?
Christ’s mission on earth is finished. Jesus had come to earth to save humanity from their sins by offering Himself as the ultimate sacrifice. Now that he has done it, the mission is finished. The work of redemption has been accomplished.
The debt of our sins is paid in full. Through His death on the cross, Christ atoned for our sins. Thus, sin has no more hold on us, if only we ask our Jesus to save us. Since death came into the world through the sin of man, with sin accounted for, death no longer has a foothold on us. Christ gained victory over sin and death. It is finished.
As believers, we can take great comfort in these words, knowing that through Christ's sacrifice on the cross, our sins have been forgiven and our salvation has been secured. Further, this statement is also an encouragement and inspiration for us to fulfil our God-given purpose on earth and accomplish what He has called us to do. May the LORD grant us the strength to pursue the same.
