“Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.’ ”

This is the final statement uttered by Jesus Christ on the cross, and is recorded in Luke 23:46.

And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, “Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.’ ” Having said this, He breathed His last. Luke 23:46

Jesus finished the work for which he was sent to earth. He proclaimed the same victoriously in his previous saying. With the work completed, it was time for him to die. But like Jesus had said time and again to his followers and opposers, Jesus was in control and backed by the Father at all times. Unlike others who were unsure about where they’d go, Jesus knew exactly where he was headed and committed himself unto the Father. Till the end, Jesus demonstrated his complete trust in the Father. This is also a statement of comfort. Jesus had already endured hours of torture and humiliation, and now he was nearing the end of his life. Having succeeded in his mission, Jesus looked forward to his Father to take him further.

This statement is significant in many ways. First, it shows Jesus' obedience to God even unto death. He willingly surrendered his life to God's will, trusting that He would take care of him in death as he had in life. Second, it highlights the close relationship between Jesus and the Father. Throughout his life, Jesus had a close relationship with God the Father, and in his final moments, he demonstrated that he continued to trust and rely on God completely.

Finally, for us, it serves as an assurance. Following Jesus, being washed by his blood, we are free from sin and when the curtain falls, we can be assured that we’d be heading to the LORD. Thus, we too can say in faith, “Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.” Additionally, this reliance on the LORD need not be only in our deathbed, rather, if we are true and strive to fulfil the work of the LORD, then we can commit our life into the Father’s hand as well. This way, everything which we do, will be guided by our LORD, and he will take care of us.
