The First Book of Samuel

The First Book of Samuel records the transition in Israel from the period of the judges to the monarchy. This important change in Israel's national life is centered mainly around three men: Samuel, the last judge; Saul, Israel's first king; and David, Israel's second and greatest king, whose early adventures before coming into power are interwoven with the accounts of Samuel and Saul.

The theme of this book, is that faithfulness to God brings his blessing, while disobedience brings disaster. This is reflected in almost every character in this book. The establishment of monarchy is recorded with mixed feelings. The LORD allowed monarchy in response to the people's request, however, the LORD himself was regarded as the real king of Israel. The chosen king was under the LORD, just like everyone else and the rights of all people, rich and poor alike, were to be maintained.

Traditionally, the authorship of the book is accredited to Samuel, with additions by the prophets Gad and Nathan who appear during David's reign. The book of Samuel, (along with the books of Joshua, Judges and Kings) constitute a theological history of the Israelites and aims to explain God's law for Israel under the guidance of the prophets.

The Book of Samuel is easy to read as its mostly a historical narrative. But it also contains crucial lessons which is applicable even now. In the forthcoming weeks, lets meditate this book and see what lessons God has in store for us. I hope you'll follow along! See you in the next one. Take care of yourself and each other!.
